Mission Dolores, San Francisco

historic place

Mission Dolores, formally known as Mission San Francisco de Asís, is a historic place in San Francisco County. It was founded by the Franciscan order in 1776. The mission received its common name, Mission Dolores, from a nearby creek, Arroyo de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, or 'Creek of Sorrows'. The current adobe chapel, San Francisco's oldest intact building, began construction in 1788 and was dedicated on August 2, 1791. Its original adobe brick walls and roof tiles remain in place. This structure has witnessed significant events, including the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, which it survived. The mission grounds also include a historic cemetery, the only one remaining within San Francisco city limits. It is the final resting place for many Ohlone, Miwok, and early California pioneers. Mission Dolores stands as a direct link to the Spanish colonial era in California.
