New Mission Theater, San Francisco
historic place
The New Mission Theater, located in San Francisco's Mission District, opened on May 4, 1916. It was originally designed by the Reid Brothers. In 1932, architect Timothy Pflueger remodeled the theater, transforming it into an Art Deco-style showpiece. The theater was a centerpiece of the "Mission Miracle Mile," a bustling theater district in the first half of the 20th century. It was the first large movie palace constructed in the Mission District. The New Mission Theater closed as a film house in May 1993. It was later designated a San Francisco Landmark on May 27, 2004, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 9, 2001. After extensive renovation, the theater reopened in December 2015. The New Mission Theater stands as a significant example of an early 20th-century movie palace in San Francisco.
