Old Ohio Street Houses

historic place

The Old Ohio Street Houses are located on Osgood Place in San Francisco, California. This short, narrow street was originally known as Ohio Street, officially changing to Osgood Place in 1909. These three brick buildings were constructed between 1900 and 1907. They provided small, simple living quarters for working-class people, with units typically around 462 square feet. Osgood Place was situated in the heart of the Barbary Coast District, an area with an international reputation for lawlessness and licentiousness. Despite this environment, Italian families often owned and occupied these buildings, some living there until the 1910s. The building at 17 Osgood Place was damaged during the 1906 earthquake and fire but was rebuilt using its existing brick walls. The Old Ohio Street Houses were listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 31, 1979. They represent a significant part of San Francisco's working-class residential history within the Barbary Coast era.
