Presidio Chapel

historic place

The Presidio Chapel is a historic place located in San Francisco, California. It was built in 1931 by the U.S. Army. The chapel features Spanish Mission Revival architecture. Inside, visitors can observe high ceilings with original redwood beams and wrought-iron chandeliers. A significant fresco by Victor Arnautoff, completed in 1935, depicts the peacetime activities of the U.S. Army and the history of the land. The chapel also features arched stained-glass windows by Willemina Ogterop, also completed in 1935. Ogterop was the first woman stained-glass artist west of the Mississippi inducted into the Stained-Glass Artists Guild. Originally a Protestant chapel, it later became a place for interfaith worship for military personnel and their families. The Presidio Chapel is recognized as a significant contributing structure within the Presidio's National Landmark District.
