Rincon Annex, San Francisco

historic place

Welcome to Rincon Annex, a significant historic place in San Francisco. This building, located near the Embarcadero, was originally a United States Post Office mail handling facility. Groundbreaking began in June 1939, and construction finished by October 1940. Designed by Gilbert S. Underwood, Rincon Annex is a notable example of the Streamline Moderne architectural style. It was built as a project of the New Deal's Work Projects Administration, or WPA. Inside the lobby, you'll find the "History of San Francisco" mural series. These 27 panels, painted by Anton Refregier between 1941 and 1948, depict California's history. The murals generated controversy due to their social realism style and subject matter. Rincon Annex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and designated a San Francisco Landmark. Today, it forms part of the larger Rincon Center complex. This site matters historically as a prominent example of New Deal-era public architecture and art.
