Roos House, San Francisco

historic place

Here in San Francisco's Presidio Heights neighborhood stands the Roos House, a notable historic place. Located at 3500 Jackson Street, this residence was completed in 1909. It was designed by the renowned architect Bernard Maybeck. The house was commissioned by Morris Meyerfeld, a partner in the Orpheum Theater Circuit, as a wedding gift for his daughter, Elizabeth Leslie Meyerfeld, and her husband, Leon L. Roos, of Roos Brothers Men's Clothing. Maybeck designed this three-story wood-frame house in a Tudor Revival style, featuring Gothic ornamentation. Spanning approximately 9,000 square feet, it is recognized as the largest residence Maybeck designed for a San Francisco client. Maybeck's design extended to the interior, where he created light fixtures, fireplaces, and some of the furniture. The Roos House was designated a San Francisco Landmark in 1973. Its architectural significance led to its listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. This house represents a key example of Bernard Maybeck's residential architecture in San Francisco.
