Russian Hill--Paris Block Architectural District

historic place

The Russian Hill--Paris Block Architectural District is a designated Historic Place in San Francisco, California. This 1.5-acre district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 7, 1988, for its architectural significance. It encompasses a group of eleven residential buildings, primarily along Green Street, constructed between approximately 1859 and 1925. These dwellings showcase a variety of architectural styles from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including Italianate and Pueblo Mission Revival. The name "Paris Block" is thought to have originated from the Parisian appearance of the Bos Apartments, designed by architect Lewis P. Hobart. Notably, some houses on the south side of the block survived the 1906 earthquake and fire. The district offers a concentrated example of San Francisco's residential architectural evolution.
