San Francisco Fire Department Engine Co. Number 2

historic place

San Francisco Fire Department Engine Company Number 2 has a history dating back to December 3, 1866, when it was organized as part of the city's new paid fire department. The historic firehouse at 460 Bush Street, which served Engine Company Number 2, was completed in 1908. This building holds particular importance as it was the first permanent firehouse rebuilt in downtown San Francisco following the catastrophic 1906 earthquake and fire. City Architect Newton J. Tharp designed the structure in the Beaux-Arts style, reflecting the architectural trends of the period. Recognized for its historical and architectural significance, the firehouse at 460 Bush Street was designated a San Francisco Official Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. This site represents a key moment in San Francisco's recovery and the evolution of its professional fire services after a major disaster.
