San Francisco State Teacher's College
historic place
This site in San Francisco County marks the historic location of San Francisco State Teacher's College. The institution began in 1899 as the San Francisco State Normal School. Its original Nob Hill campus was destroyed by the 1906 earthquake and fire, leading to its relocation here. In 1921, it was renamed San Francisco State Teachers College. The campus features four Spanish Colonial Revival style buildings, designed by California State Architect George McDougall, constructed between 1924 and 1935. This college was crucial for formal teacher training in California, educating many Bay Area teachers for decades. It was later renamed San Francisco State College and eventually moved to a new campus. This location is historically significant for its foundational role in California's teacher education system.
