Schoenstein and Company Pipe Organ Factory

historic place

The Schoenstein and Company Pipe Organ Factory in San Francisco, California, is a historic place. Felix F. Schoenstein founded his organ building firm in 1877, making it the oldest and largest organ builder in the Western United States. The factory building at 3101 20th Street was constructed in 1928. Its facade still displays the inscription: 'Felix E Schoenstein & Sons, Pipe Organs, Established 1877.' This building is one of the few in the world purpose-built for organ manufacturing. Schoenstein and Company operated here until 2004. The site was designated a San Francisco Landmark in 1977 and added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1978. This location is historically important for its unique architectural purpose and its contribution to American pipe organ craftsmanship.
