Six-Inch Rifled Gun No. 9
historic place
Six-Inch Rifled Gun No. 9 is a historic military artifact at Battery Chamberlin in San Francisco, California. Battery Chamberlin, within the Presidio, was built in 1904 as part of the Endicott-era coastal defense system. Its role was to protect the Golden Gate and its underwater minefields. This particular gun, a Model of 1905, was manufactured in 1908. It is mounted on a disappearing carriage, a design that allowed the gun to rise for firing and then lower behind a concrete wall for reloading and protection. The National Park Service installed this Six-Inch Rifled Gun No. 9 at Battery Chamberlin in 1977. This gun is a rare, operable example of Endicott-period coastal defense weaponry, representing a significant era in San Francisco's military history.
