Spencer, John, House
historic place
The John Spencer House is a historic place in San Francisco, California. This Queen Anne Victorian mansion was constructed in 1895. It was built for John C. Spencer, who was a successful milliner. Located at 1080 Haight Street in the Haight-Ashbury district, the house showcases intricate wood carvings and detailed ornamentation. Architects Fred P. Rabin and William Tegeler are credited with its design. The house features a "Flatiron" shape, which is a design more commonly seen in commercial buildings. It is considered the only exclusively residential flatiron building in San Francisco. The John Spencer House has endured through various city events, including earthquakes and fires, preserving much of its original fabric. Its survival is partly attributed to its history as a single-family dwelling. This historic residence provides a tangible example of late 19th-century residential architecture in San Francisco.
