SS Jeremiah O'Brien

historic place

The SS Jeremiah O'Brien is a historic place in San Francisco County. This Liberty ship was launched in 1943. During World War II, it served as a crucial cargo vessel, participating in the D-Day invasion of Normandy in 1944. The O'Brien completed eleven trips across the English Channel, delivering essential supplies. After decades in reserve, the ship was restored and became a museum in San Francisco in 1979. In 1994, the SS Jeremiah O'Brien sailed back to Normandy for the 50th anniversary of D-Day, the only ship from the original invasion fleet to return. Now docked at Pier 35, it stands as a significant reminder of American wartime shipbuilding.
