The building served as the home for the Swedish Society of San Francisco, which was founded in 1875. Designed by architect August Nordin, the hall features an Arts and Crafts style. Its architectural finishes demonstrate a high level of craftsmanship, with interior lodge rooms named after Norse gods. These rooms include intricate wood detailing and soaring truss work. At the turn of the 20th century, this neighborhood was a significant Scandinavian enclave. The hall housed various businesses, including Cafe Du Nord, which opened in 1908 and remains one of San Francisco's oldest saloons and restaurants. The Swedish American Hall is a San Francisco Landmark, recognized for its architectural significance and its role in the city's Swedish community.
