Tobin House

historic place

The Tobin House, located at 1969 California Street in San Francisco, was completed in 1915. This historic home was designed by prominent architect Willis Polk. It was commissioned by Michael H. de Young, founder of the San Francisco Chronicle, for his daughter, Constance de Young Tobin, and her husband, Joseph E. Tobin. Built in the Tudor Gothic Revival style, the house features a distinctive archway on its side. This architectural element was originally intended to connect to a mirror-image house for de Young's other daughter, but that second house was never constructed. The Tobin House is recognized as San Francisco Landmark 260. It stands today as the last remaining part of Michael H. de Young's original estate, offering a glimpse into the city's early 20th-century architectural and family history.
