Yerba Buena Island Lighthouse

historic place

The Yerba Buena Island Lighthouse stands in San Francisco, California. This historic place was completed in 1875. Its light was first activated on October 1, 1875. The lighthouse features a unique octagonal wooden tower, constructed in a Victorian style. It originally housed a fifth-order Fresnel lens. The United States Lighthouse Service established a district depot on Yerba Buena Island in 1873, two years before the lighthouse was built. The lighthouse served as an essential aid to navigation for vessels in San Francisco Bay. It was automated in 1958. Today, the Yerba Buena Island Lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation. The former keeper's quarters now serve as a residence for the Coast Guard District Commander. The Yerba Buena Island Lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. This recognizes its significance as a preserved example of a late 19th-century inner harbor lighthouse.
