YMCA Hotel, San Francisco

historic place

The YMCA Hotel, a historic place in San Francisco's Tenderloin District, is located at 351 Turk Street. Erected in 1928, this twelve-story building was designed by architect Frederick H. Meyer. It showcases the late Chicago School style, with Romanesque and Byzantine Revival motifs, representing one of the city's final major buildings in this pre-1925 aesthetic. The hotel was built to provide affordable lodging for young men, offering 436 rooms. Notably, it was the only YMCA in California constructed exclusively for hotel use. During the Great Depression, the hotel adapted by admitting women in 1935 to maintain occupancy. The YMCA Hotel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on February 6, 1986. Today, the building houses the Oasis Apartments. This site highlights charitable community efforts and architectural innovation in San Francisco.
