Ashworth-Remillard House

historic place

The Ashworth-Remillard House, a historic place in Santa Clara County, stands in San Jose, California. This two-story Victorian-style farmhouse was built in 1864. It was constructed for James Ashworth, a pioneer who arrived in California during the Gold Rush. Ashworth settled in San Jose in 1854, establishing a farm on 250 acres. In 1891, Peter Remillard, another Gold Rush participant and founder of the Remillard Brick Company, acquired the property. Remillard established a brick-manufacturing business on the grounds in 1892, utilizing the abundant clay deposits near Coyote Creek. Bricks from this site were used in many San Jose buildings. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 12, 1976. It remains one of San Jose's oldest structures, reflecting the city's early agricultural and industrial development.
