East San Jose Carnegie Library
historic place
The East San Jose Carnegie Library, located at 1102 East Santa Clara Street in San Jose, California, is a notable historic place. This library was built in 1907, made possible by a seven-thousand-dollar grant from Andrew Carnegie. It officially opened to the public in 1908. Prominent San Jose architect Jacob Lenzen designed the building in a Classical Revival style, featuring a conventional symmetrical shape. Initially, it served the independent City of East San Jose. In 1911, it joined the San Jose Public Library system following East San Jose's annexation. The East San Jose Carnegie Library holds distinction as the last operating Carnegie library in Santa Clara County. It has undergone several renovations and expansions over the years, including significant updates in 1974, 1981, and a major project completed in 2009. The library was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. This site continues to serve the community, reflecting its enduring historical importance to San Jose.
