Hotel Montgomery, San Jose
historic place
The Hotel Montgomery, a historic place in downtown San Jose, California, opened in 1911. Developer Thomas S. Montgomery commissioned the building, designed by architect William Binder in the Classical Revival style. It was San Jose's first reinforced concrete structure. On January 29, 2000, the entire hotel was moved 187 feet south. This $8.6 million operation accommodated the expansion of the adjacent Fairmont San Jose Hotel. Weighing over 4,700 tons, it is considered one of the heaviest buildings ever moved intact on hydraulic jacks and rubber wheels. The hotel reopened in 2004 and is now the Four Points by Sheraton San Jose Downtown. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006, this site represents a unique preservation effort in San Jose.
