Luis Maria Peralta Adobe

historic place

The Luis Maria Peralta Adobe in San Jose, California, is the city's oldest building. It was constructed in 1797 by José Manuel Gonzeles, an Apache Indian. Gonzeles was a founder of the Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe, California's first municipal government, established in 1777. In 1808, Luis Maria Peralta acquired the adobe. Peralta, a soldier, served as comisionado, the highest official for Pueblo San Jose, from 1807 to 1822. A historical marker, erected in 1976, identifies it as 'The last vestige of El Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe.' It highlights that both Gonzeles and Peralta were part of the Anza Expedition in 1775-76. This adobe provides a direct connection to San Jose's foundational history.
