Moir Building, San Jose
historic place
The Moir Building, a historic place in San Jose, California, was constructed by William Moir between 1893 and 1894. This three-story brick structure, named after its developer, features Queen Anne and Romanesque Revival architectural styles. Initially, the building housed the Straford Hotel, later becoming the St. James Hotel in the 1930s. It played a role in local commerce as the home of the San Jose Board of Trade, a precursor to the San Jose Chamber of Commerce. William Moir, the developer, also operated a bicycle shop within the building. The Moir Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 29, 1982. Its cornice is inscribed with "MOIR BUILDING." Following renovations, the building became part of the Hillbrook School's San José campus in 2025. It represents a significant example of late 19th-century commercial architecture in San Jose.
