Roberto--Sunol Adobe
historic place
The Roberto--Sunol Adobe, a historic place in San Jose, Santa Clara County, stands as a significant landmark. The original adobe was built in 1836 by Roberto Balermino, a Native Californian from the Tamien people. He built it on Rancho de los Coches, a property officially granted to him by Governor Micheltorena in 1844. In 1847, Antonio Suñol, the new owner, enlarged the dwelling, adding a one-story brick house adjoining the adobe. This brick house was the first of its kind completed in Alta California. Later, in 1853, Captain Stefano Splivalo acquired the property and added a second-story frame structure and balcony. The historical marker for this site was erected in 1977. Today, the Roberto--Sunol Adobe is preserved as a museum by the California Pioneers of Santa Clara County, offering insight into early Californian life.
