Spillman Engineering 3-Abreast Carousel
historic place
The Spillman Engineering 3-Abreast Carousel is a historic place in San Jose, California, located in Santa Clara County. This carousel was built in 1920 by the Spillman Engineering Company in North Tonawanda, New York. It features 30 hand-carved jumping wooden horses and two hand-carved chariots, designed in the Country Fair style. The carousel traveled with fairgrounds along the eastern coast before its acquisition by Whale's Tail Amusement Park in New Hampshire around 1945. In 1992, the carousel underwent restoration, preserving its original wooden components, horses, and chariots. It was then installed at the Eastridge Shopping Center in San Jose in 1993. The Spillman Engineering 3-Abreast Carousel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 13, 2000. This recognition acknowledges its historical significance as a well-preserved example of a recreational genre and for its animal carving. The carousel was formerly located in the Eastridge Shopping Center.
