The De Anza Hotel, San Jose, California

historic place

The De Anza Hotel, located in San Jose, California, is a significant historic place. It opened on February 26, 1931, as a civic improvement project during the Great Depression. The San Jose Community Hotel Corporation funded its construction, with over 200 local citizens providing stock subscriptions. Architect William H. Weeks designed the hotel, and Carl Swenson was the contractor. The De Anza Hotel is recognized for its Zig Zag Moderne, or Art Deco, architectural style. It stands as one of San Jose's few buildings reflecting this design. At the time of its opening, it was the tallest hotel in the city's central business district. The hotel was named in honor of Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 21, 1982. A historical marker, erected by San Jose History Walk, commemorates these details. The De Anza Hotel represents a notable example of early 20th-century architectural and civic development in San Jose.
