San Luis Obispo Carnegie Library
historic place
The San Luis Obispo Carnegie Library, a historic place in San Luis Obispo County, received a ten-thousand-dollar grant from Andrew Carnegie in 1903. The library opened to the public in October 1905. Architect William H. Weeks designed the building in the Richardsonian Romanesque style. It was constructed using local red bricks, yellow sandstone, and Bishop's Peak granite. The building served as the city's public library until 1955. In 1956, it became a county historical museum. Today, it houses the History Center of San Luis Obispo County. This site remains notable for its architecture and its historical service to the community.
