Eugene J. de Sabla, Jr., Teahouse and Tea Garden
historic place
In San Mateo, California, stands the Eugene J. de Sabla, Jr., Teahouse and Tea Garden. Eugene J. de Sabla, Jr. acquired this property in 1906. The garden was built around 1907, with its teahouse completed around 1909. It is the only surviving private garden designed by Makoto Hagiwara, known for his work on San Francisco's Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park. This Shin-style garden features elements like waterfalls and a man-made mountain. In 1992, the teahouse and tea garden were listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A historical marker, erected in 1993, calls it "Higurashi-en," meaning "Garden Worthy of a Day's Contemplation." This site represents an early example of Japanese cultural influence on California design.
