National Bank of San Mateo

historic place

The National Bank of San Mateo building is located at 164 South B Street in San Mateo, California. This historic structure was built in 1924. It showcases a Beaux Arts architectural style, which is the only example of this design in San Mateo. The building was designed by architect William H. Weeks and constructed by Samuel A. Wisnom. For three decades, this institution operated as San Mateo's sole locally-owned financial institution. Its establishment was a direct response to the growth of branch banking in California. The original Bank of San Mateo was incorporated in 1894. The 1924 building served as the last home for this locally-operated bank. In 1955, the National Bank of San Mateo was acquired by Crocker-Anglo Bank. Later, in the 1980s, Wells Fargo absorbed Crocker-Anglo and subsequently closed this branch. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. It stands as a significant example of early 20th-century banking architecture and local financial history in San Mateo.
