Vollers, Amelia, House

historic place

The Amelia Vollers House, in San Mateo, California, is a historic Queen Anne cottage. It was built in 1891. Amelia Vollers, a Russian immigrant, purchased the land for the house in 1889. James Sharpe Tannahill constructed this one-and-a-half-story dwelling. The house exemplifies the highly ornamented Queen Anne style, specifically its Spindlework subtype. It stands in what was known as the Western Addition, a subdivision created in 1889. This area developed due to new train service connecting San Mateo and San Francisco. The Amelia Vollers House is one of the few Queen Anne style homes remaining in San Mateo. It is also one of the surviving works of its builder, James Sharpe Tannahill. The house was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2015. It embodies the distinctive characteristics of its architectural style.
