Dixie Schoolhouse
historic place
The Dixie Schoolhouse is a historic place in San Rafael, Marin County. This Victorian Italianate one-room schoolhouse was built in 1864. The property was deeded to James Miller by Don Timoteo Murphy, part of the Las Gallinas Ranch. The school operated continuously from 1864 until 1957. Josephine Codoni Leary was its last teacher, serving the Dixie School District until her retirement in 1971. In June 1971, the schoolhouse was moved to its current location. It was then placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. A historical marker was erected in 1994 by the Native Sons of the Golden West. Today, the Dixie Schoolhouse is Marin County's oldest and last unaltered mid-Victorian one-room school. It is preserved by the Old Dixie School Foundation and used for educational purposes and community events.
