Erskine B. McNear House

historic place

The Erskine B. McNear House stands in San Rafael, Marin County. Built in 1906, architect Brainerd Jones designed it for Erskine Baker McNear. The residence blends Colonial Revival, Craftsman Bungalow, and Bay Area Shingle architectural styles. The McNear family significantly influenced Marin and Sonoma Counties' economic development. Their interests included real estate, timber, ranching, shipping, and railroads. The house originally served as a dairy ranch headquarters on the family's Point San Pedro property, constructed with local brick. In 1957, after Erskine McNear's death, the Episcopal Diocese of California acquired the house. It has since functioned as a church, community center, and nursery school. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, the Erskine B. McNear House reflects a notable part of San Rafael's history.
