San Rafael Improvement Club

historic place

The San Rafael Improvement Club is a historic place in Marin County, California. Its building has a unique origin. It was first constructed in 1915 for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco, where it served as the Victrola company Pavilion. After the exposition, the building was disassembled. It was then moved across San Francisco Bay and reassembled in San Rafael in 1916. Here, it became the permanent clubhouse for the San Rafael Improvement Club. The club itself was founded earlier, in 1902, as a civic organization. Its members worked to improve the community, notably by combating mosquito infestations and planting thousands of trees. Over time, it became primarily a women's organization. Designed in the Classical Revival style, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The San Rafael Improvement Club building represents both a surviving structure from the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition and the significant civic contributions of its members to San Rafael.
