James Lick Mill, Santa Clara
historic place
In Santa Clara, Santa Clara County, stands the historic James Lick Mill. James Lick built a four-stone, water-powered flour mill here around 1855, drawing water from the Guadalupe River. A circular brick granary, 66 feet in diameter, remains from this original structure. In 1873, the mill became California's first paper mill. A fire destroyed the original mill in 1882. A new mill was later built, and by 1902, the complex was converted for alcohol production. The City of Santa Clara Historical and Landmarks Commission erected a marker for the Lick Mill and Granary in 1989. This site showcases Santa Clara County's industrial past.
