Eight Mile House, Santa Margarita
historic place
The Eight Mile House, a historic place in Santa Margarita, San Luis Obispo County, was built in 1877. The Bean Brothers constructed this building. Its name reflects its distance, exactly eight miles from the mission town of San Luis Obispo. This structure functioned as a hotel for travelers. Located at the north base of the steep Cuesta Grade, on the original El Camino Real and the 1870s Stagecoach Road, it offered crucial lodging. Travelers could park wagons and rent extra teams of horses for their onward journey. The Eight Mile House is among San Luis Obispo County's oldest 19th-century hotel buildings. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 31, 1995. This site is significant for its role in the county's transportation and commerce.
