Charmont Apartments
historic place
The Charmont Apartments, a historic place in Santa Monica, California, in Los Angeles County, was constructed in 1928. Architect Max Maltzman designed the building, blending Spanish Colonial Revival and Art Deco styles, a combination sometimes known as 'Med-Deco.' This five-story structure features a stucco exterior, a red tile roof, and a walled courtyard with a two-tiered fountain. When it opened, the Charmont was a luxury high-rise, providing amenities such as maid service and a dining room. It addressed the demand for multi-family housing during Santa Monica's population growth in the late 1920s. The Charmont Apartments were added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 25, 1996. Its unique architecture and historical role reflect Santa Monica's development during that era.
