Horatio West Court
historic place
Horatio West Court, located in Santa Monica, California, in Los Angeles County, represents a significant chapter in early 20th-century architecture. Designed by architect Irving Gill, this complex was built in 1919. It consists of six attached buildings grouped on a 60-foot lot, demonstrating Gill's innovative approach to residential design. The architecture features flat roofs, unadorned walls, and simple arches, combining elements of the California Mission Revival style with a revolutionary modernism. Architectural historians consider it a masterpiece and a precursor to the International style. Horatio West Court was recognized for its historical and architectural importance when it became the first building in Santa Monica listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. It was subsequently designated a Santa Monica Historic Landmark in 1979. This site remains an important example of Irving Gill's pioneering work in modern architecture and his vision for efficient housing.
