Ebell Club of Santa Paula

historic place

The Ebell Club of Santa Paula, in Ventura County, California, is a historic place. The Santa Paula chapter was organized in 1913, as the ninth Ebell Club in California. These clubs were named for Dr. Adrian Ebell, who promoted women's advancement. In 1917, Alice Stowell McKevett donated land for Ebell Park and erected the first half of the building in memory of her husband. Designed by Los Angeles architects Sumner Hunt and Silas R. Burns, the structure exhibits a shingled Craftsman style. The dining room and kitchen were added in 1928. The Ebell Club building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. It is recognized for its architecture and social history. Today, the building houses the Santa Paula Theater Center. This site reflects the historical role of women's clubs in community development.
