Comstock House

historic place

The Comstock House, a historic place in Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, was built in 1905. Architect Brainerd Jones designed the home for James Wyatt Oates. Nellie Comstock purchased it in 1916, and her family resided there for 74 years. Judge Hilliard Comstock lived in the house until 1991, with his wife, Helen Comstock, instrumental in its preservation. The house showcases the East Coast Shingle Style, featuring an open floor plan, many windows, and asymmetrical elements. It is a notable example of early 20th-century architecture, largely in its original condition. The Comstock House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. This site is historically significant for its preserved early 20th-century Shingle Style architecture in Santa Rosa.
