Hood, William, House
historic place
The William Hood House in Santa Rosa, California, is a historic place. William Hood constructed the house in 1858 for his bride, Elsia Shaw of Sonoma. Notably, the house was built using bricks fired on the property itself. It is the only existing brick building in Sonoma County from the pre-Civil War era. The site was originally part of Rancho Los Guilucos, granted in 1839. The house served various purposes over its history. From 1905 to 1918, it was a summer residence for former United States Senator Thomas Kearns of Utah. In 1924, the Knights of Pythias purchased the property to serve as a home for their elderly members. The State of California acquired the property in 1943, and it became the Los Guilucos School for Girls. The William Hood House was designated California Historical Landmark number 692 in 1959, with its marker erected in 1960. It was also listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. This site is historically significant due to its unique construction and its long-standing role in the community and state.
