Rosenburg's Department Store
historic place
Rosenburg's Department Store, located at Fourth and D Streets in downtown Santa Rosa, California, holds a significant place in the city's history. The original Rosenberg's, which began as "The Red Front" dry goods store in 1897, was rebuilt after a fire in 1936. The current Streamline Moderne building was designed by Hertzka and Knowles of San Francisco. Construction began in January 1937, and the store opened on October 27, 1937. For many years, it was the tallest building in Santa Rosa and remains the city's most significant example of Streamline Moderne architecture. A model of the building was featured at the 1939 San Francisco World's Fair, showcasing it as an example of future architectural technology. Rosenberg's Department Store closed in 1988. After facing potential demolition, the building was saved through preservation efforts. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 29, 1994, recognized for its architectural significance. Today, the historic structure houses a Barnes & Noble bookstore, continuing its role as a prominent downtown landmark. This site illustrates Santa Rosa's architectural heritage and commitment to preservation.
