Sweet House, Santa Rosa

historic place

The Sweet House, a historic Queen Anne residence, stands at 607 Cherry Street in Santa Rosa, Sonoma County. This home was completed in June of 1886. It became the residence of James S. Sweet and Julia Goodyear Sweet in 1894. James Sweet was president of Sweet's Business College and served as a two-term Mayor of Santa Rosa. His leadership marked the city's transition to progressive municipal reform. Julia Sweet was a leader in religious, social, and political activities throughout the city and state. After the 1906 Santa Rosa earthquake, the house was remodeled in 1907, adding Period Revival details. The Sweet House is significant for its architecture within the Cherry Street Historic District. Its association with James and Julia Sweet, prominent Santa Rosa leaders from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, contributes to its historical importance. The house was registered as a historic place on January 14, 1988.
