Saratoga Foothill Club

historic place

The Saratoga Foothill Club, located at 20399 Park Place in Saratoga, California, is a significant historic place in Santa Clara County. The organization began in 1907 as the Foothill Study Club, founded by twelve women. These women sought community and intellectual engagement in the then-agricultural area. As the oldest women's social club in Saratoga, its members initially met in homes. By 1914, the club decided to build a permanent clubhouse. Completed in 1915, the building was designed by Julia Morgan, California's first licensed female architect. The redwood structure exemplifies the Craftsman style. Beyond its architectural merit, the club played a role in civic life, including efforts to establish the Saratoga Village Library in 1927. The clubhouse also served as Saratoga's first movie theater for a period. In 1988, the City of Saratoga designated it as Historic Landmark Number One. It was later added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 27, 2005. This site reflects the civic and social contributions of women in Saratoga during the early 20th century.
