Saratoga Village Library

historic place

The Saratoga Village Library, located in Santa Clara County, is a historic place. This building, designed in the Spanish Colonial Revival style by architect Eldridge T. Spencer, opened in 1927. Its construction was funded by twelve thousand dollars in private donations, a fundraising effort led by the Saratoga Foothill Club and Sheldon P. Patterson. A memorial plaque at the entrance honors Mr. Patterson for his role in acquiring the land and overseeing the library's construction. For 51 years, the Saratoga Village Library served as the community's only library, playing a central role in Saratoga's civic life throughout the 20th century. In 1978, a new Saratoga Library opened. The Village Library continued as a secondary community library for five more years. Since 1983, the building has housed the Book-Go-Round, a used bookstore operated by the Friends of the Saratoga Libraries. The Saratoga Village Library was officially placed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 17, 2007. This site remains significant for its enduring contribution to Saratoga's community development.
