Sutter Creek Grammar School

historic place

The Sutter Creek Grammar School, located in Amador County, is a historic place. The current two-story brick building was constructed in 1870 and 1871. This replaced an earlier school, built around 1857, which was destroyed by an arson fire in May of 1870. The community raised ten thousand dollars for its construction. The school operated from 1870 until 1956. It educated hundreds of children, sometimes up to 350, from surrounding areas. Its large, two-story brick construction and Classic Revival architectural style were uncommon in the Mother Lode, where most schools were smaller wooden structures. The Sutter Creek Grammar School was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. A historical marker, erected in 1977, notes: 'Learning was revered by Sutter Creek citizens whose school stands as an historic proof of the belief in education'. After restoration, the building now serves as a community center, continuing its public service in Sutter Creek.
