Shadelands Ranch House
historic place
Welcome to Shadelands Ranch House in Walnut Creek, California. This historic place in Contra Costa County was originally part of a ranch established in 1856 by Hiram Penniman, an early pioneer in the Ygnacio Valley. Penniman's Shadelands Fruit Farm became one of the region's first large-scale commercial orchard operations. The Shadelands Ranch House itself was completed in 1903. Designed by the firm of Eckers and Sells, it stands as a significant example of Colonial Revival architecture in Contra Costa County. The house remained in family hands or under family trust until 1970, when the Gospel Foundation donated it and 2.67 acres of land to the City of Walnut Creek. Since 1972, the Walnut Creek Historical Society has managed Shadelands Ranch House, opening it to the public as a historical museum. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. Today, it preserves a record of early 20th-century life and agricultural development in the Ygnacio Valley.
