Sunset Towers, West Hollywood

historic place

The Sunset Towers, located in West Hollywood, California, is a significant historic place. Designed in 1929 by architect Leland A. Bryant, this building, originally known as the Sunset Tower, opened in 1931. It quickly became recognized as one of the finest examples of Art Deco architecture in the Los Angeles area, particularly for its Zig Zag Moderne style. As the first high-rise on the Sunset Strip, it was initially a luxury apartment hotel. Many Hollywood celebrities resided here, including John Wayne, Howard Hughes, Marilyn Monroe, and Frank Sinatra. The building's distinctive plaster friezes feature plants, animals, and zeppelins. In 1980, the Sunset Tower was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This landmark continues to represent a key period in Hollywood's architectural and social history.
