historic place
The James H. and Frances E. Laughlin House, also known as Shady Farm, is located southeast of Windsor in Sonoma County, California. This historic residence was constructed around 1876. J.T. Ludwig, a notable builder in the county, designed and built the house. It features a combination of Greek Revival and Italianate architectural elements. James H. Laughlin, born in Tennessee in 1819, and Frances E. Briggs, born in 1832, married in Iowa in 1853. They settled in Sonoma County in 1855, where their initial 160-acre property eventually expanded to 1200 acres. The Laughlins significantly developed their land through diversified agriculture. They cultivated a 30-acre Zinfandel vineyard and 25 acres of table grapes, producing 75 tons by 1893. Their farm also included diversified orchards and alfalfa for livestock. The James H. and Frances E. Laughlin House was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 26, 1979. The house reflects the agricultural success and architectural trends of Sonoma County's farming families in the late 19th century.
