Main Street Historic District-- Winters
historic place
The Main Street Historic District in Winters, California, also known as the Downtown Winters Historic District, is located in Yolo County. This historic place was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 2, 1997. The district's period of significance spans from 1875 to 1946. The town of Winters itself was established in 1875, named after Theodore Winters, who donated land for the Vaca Valley Railroad's northern terminus. By 1876, Winters had become a busy agricultural and commercial center. The Main Street Historic District reflects the development of commerce and agriculture from the late nineteenth century through World War II. It encompasses thirteen contributing buildings on both sides of Main Street, between Railroad Avenue and First Street. Notable structures include the Seaman's Opera House and Chulick's Market, dating back to the mid-1870s. The DeVilbiss Hotel, built in 1899, and the 1904 Bank of Winters Business Block are also key elements of the district. This district provides a view into the commercial and agricultural history of Winters.
