Gibson, William B., House

historic place

The William B. Gibson House, located in Woodland, California, is a significant historic place in Yolo County. William Byas Gibson arrived in California from Missouri in 1850. He began construction of this house in 1856, which became the center of his 3,000-acre estate. The initial structure was built in 1857. Gibson made several extensions to the house between the 1870s and the early 1900s, incorporating architectural styles such as Georgian Revival, Italianate, and Neoclassical. William Gibson, along with his wife Mary Cook and their three sons, specialized in breeding cattle and large-scale farming. The Gibson family played a major role in the agricultural and commercial development of Yolo County. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Today, the William B. Gibson House serves as the Yolo County Historical Museum, preserving the history of the region.
