Woodland Opera House

historic place

The Woodland Opera House, a historic place in Yolo County, began its story in 1885 with the construction of its first building. Designed by Thomas J. Welsh, it was the first opera house to serve the Sacramento Valley. However, a fire in July 1892 destroyed the original structure. The present opera house was rebuilt on the same site between 1895 and 1896, with local businessman David N. Hershey leading the project. It incorporated a classic American playhouse interior and served as a vital center for theatrical arts in the agricultural regions. By 1913, the rise of motion pictures led to its closure. The building remained unused for decades until the Yolo County Historical Society purchased it in 1971. The Woodland Opera House was designated a California Historical Landmark in 1973. Following a significant restoration project, it reopened in 1989. It continues to operate as one of California's few functioning 19th-century opera houses, maintaining its historical importance to the performing arts.
